Theatrum Terrae Sanctae et Biblicarum Historiarum. Second edition of Christian van Adrichem's important biblical atlas, following the first of 1590, complete with the large map of Palestine and the plan of Jerusalem and the ten folding regional maps. The book is susceptible to being broken for its engraved maps, so complete copies are scarce on the market. The impressive plan of the city of Jerusalem at the time of Christ has been called "the most dramatic and important of the sixteenth century" (Nebenzahl). Van Adrichem (1533-1585) used a myriad of sources to develop his plan, including Bernhard von Breitenbach's woodcut panorama of the city, Sebastian Münster's view, the texts of pilgrims Burchard of Mount Sion and William Wey, and the Bible and Josephus. The plan is oriented to the north with the camps of the historic city's invaders just outside the city walls, and the ancient City of David and Mount Sion in the south. There are over 250 key locations identified and numbered, which are more fully described in the text. The plan of Jerusalem remained the definitive layout of the historic city until the archaeological discoveries of the 19th century.
