This is an exceedingly rare collection of five primary source letters related to the publication of the poems of EMILY DICKINSON. The letters give a unique glimpse into the intense in-fighting that took place regarding the publication of and rights to Emily's works. Three letters are addressed to Martha Gilbert Dickinson Bianchi ("Mattie"), the niece of Emily Dickinson - two of these letters are from attorneys "Hammond & Field" (dated 1900 and 1901); the third letter (with mailing envelope) is from attorney "Theodore Longfellow Frothingham" (dated 1932 with "The Evergreens" delivery address written on the mailing envelope). The fourth letter is to the publishing company "Little & Brown" from J.C. Hammond, an attorney at "Hammond & Field" (dated 1900). The fifth letter is a "draft" that appears to be from an attorney (not identified) to an unidentified recipient (undated). Also included is an empty envelope from "The Evergreens" - the house of Austin Dickinson (Emily's brother) and his wife Susan located a short walk from Emily's home. Emily Dickinson is mentioned by name within the letters, as is Lavinia Dickinson (Emily's sister), Colonel Thomas Wentworth Higginson (Emily's literary mentor and co-editor of her poems), and Mabel Loomis Todd (co-editor of Emily's poems). Also mentioned are publishers "Roberts Brothers" (the publisher of Emily's first edition of poems) and "Little, Brown, and Co."
