Women's Fight for the Vote. First edition, association copy, with the initials of the activist Hugh Franklin on the front pastedown. Franklin also copied in a spirited pro-suffrage song, which contains the refrain "Votes for Women, Hooray, Hooray!" and envisions the demise of Home Secretary Herbert Gladstone: "In an ocean of brimstone he'll frizzle and wail / With one of his own feeding-tubes for a tail".Hugh Franklin (1889-1962) joined the Men's League for Women's Suffrage in 1909. His militant actions during the campaign, which included attacking Winston Churchill with a dog whip, resulted in three prison sentences. He went on hunger strike each time he was incarcerated and was force-fed on multiple occasions. Following a month's sentence in the spring of 1911, Franklin went on holiday to Cornwall with the Pethick Lawrences to recuperate. He later married the suffragette Elsie Duval.Women's Fight for the Vote is based on articles Pethick-Lawrence first published in Votes for Women, the periodical he co-founded with his wife Emmeline in 1907. It explains political developments within the suffrage movement, explains the tactics used by suffragists, and defends militant action. A wrapped issue was issued simultaneously; no priority is assigned.
