The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. First edition, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper in her contemporary hand, "With grateful thanks for a good cup of tea, Agatha Christie, July 22nd", possibly soon after publication in June. We can trace just one inscribed copy in auction records, and the present copy is only the second such example we have handled.Agatha Christie's breakthrough work of detective fiction is widely regarded as her masterpiece, featuring her greatest detective, Hercule Poirot, and perhaps her most audacious denouement. It was her first big seller and her first book published by her lifelong publisher Collins. It was also her first work to inspire an adaptation, Michael Morton's hit play Alibi (1928), starring Charles Laughton as Poirot.
