The work reveals Smith's yearning for home; a conscientious objector, Smith and her husband emigrated from England to the US in 1939.The semi-autobiographical novel takes the form of the diary of Cassandra Mortmain, aged 17, and is set in a medieval castle based on one Smith had seen in Suffolk in 1934. It was adapted for film in 2004, starring Romola Garai, Bill Nighy, Rose Byrne, and Tara Fitzgerald.
