The Lost World. First large paper edition, third issue. Doyle's hugely popular science fiction novel inspired many works reviving prehistoric monsters, from King Kong to Jurassic Park. The story was originally serialized in the Strand Magazine in 1912."His sense of the glory and nonsense of scientific advance found happy resolution in The Lost World (1912), where academic vendetta at its most ludicrous continually punctuates a thrilling quest to establish the survival of dinosaurs" (ODNB).The large paper issue comprised 1,000 copies, of which 190 copies were issued in 1912 in blue cloth. A second issue appeared two years later in brown cloth with a cancel title page calling for a new edition. This copy is from the third issue, in the brown cloth but with the spine now giving Milford's imprint.
