Requiem and Poem without a Hero. First Thomas edition, signed limited issue, number 35 of 60 copies. This copy is additionally inscribed by Thomas to his fellow translator Michael Glenny, who is also thanked in the acknowledgements: "with thanks both for your practical help and encouraging words which first turned my thoughts again to Akhmatova. January 1976". Glenny's blind ownership stamp is on the half-title. He was considered "the most outstanding Russian translator of his generation" (The Times).Requiem was first published in Russian in 1963, in West Germany. It is a cycle of poems written from 1935 capturing the horrors and anguish of the Great Terror under Stalin, during which Akhmatova's husband and son were both sent to the gulag. The first English translation, by Robert Lowell, was published in 1964 in Atlantic. Poem without a Hero was first published in 1960 and 1961 in the journal Vozdushnye puti, and did not appear in the Soviet Union until 1976.
