First edition of this prescient analysis of the nascent German railway system and its role in consolidating the economic integration of the Zollverein. In the 1830s, Prussia led 18 former Holy Roman Empire states in establishing the Zollverein customs union, creating a free-trade area throughout much of Germany. Friedrich List (1789-1846) was among the most passionate and energetic supporters of German free trade, but he also recognized that thitis would achieve little without a developed railway system to transport goods throughout the federation. This a remarkable view considering that the first machine-powered railway in Germany had only been opened in 1835, and the first long-distance line (from Leipzig to Dresden) has been completed only in 1839.For Edward Meade Earle, "the single greatest contribution which List made to modern strategy was his elaborate discussion of the influence of railways upon the shifting balance of military power" (p. 148).
