Album of letters thanking Mountain for signed artist's proofs of A. Egerton Cooper's portrait of Churchill, "Profile for Victory". A substantial collection of letters from senior public and business figures thanking Edward Mortimer Mountain for presenting them with signed artist's proofs of A. Egerton Cooper's portrait of Churchill, "Profile for Victory". Mountain, chairman of the Eagle Star Insurance Company, purchased the portrait and commissioned the proofs for presentation to prominent figures.In September 1942, Churchill sat for the sculptor William Reid Dick. Cooper, acting as Dick's assistant, began sketching Churchill, who, impressed by the result, consented to a full portrait. "The resulting oil portrait, to which Cooper gave the title 'Profile for Victory', was first exhibited at the Royal Academy in May 1943, where it was widely praised as a 'morale-booster'" (Black, p. 12). It depicts Churchill seated in profile, smoking a cigar, with a folded newspaper on his lap. Mountain purchased the portrait and donated it to the Carlton Club in 1948; it still hangs there.The album opens with a reproduction of the portrait, a title page reading "A few acknowledgements from recipients of signed Artist's Proof's from colour plates of the Portrait of the Prime Minister", and an index of correspondents.
