CUALA PRESS: IONIDES, Alexander C.
Inquire · Offered by Peter Harrington
Ion. First edition, first impression, one of 200 copies, from the library of the printer, Elizabeth Corbet Yeats, with her bookplate. We assume that this unnumbered copy was a gift from Yeats to Louis Claude Purser. This title is one of the few books published by the Cuala Press that Miller designates "other pieces printed at the press" and not part of the standard series.Alexander ("Alec") Constantine Ionides (1862-1931), was the son of Constantine Alexander Ionides (1833-1900) and the grandson of Alexander Constantine Ionides (1810-1890). Both Alec's father and grandfather were art collectors, and the Ionides bequest in 1900 to the V&A included 90 paintings, 300 drawings and watercolours, and 750 prints. This copy is from the library of Louis Claude Purser (1854-1932), brother of the artist Sarah Purser. A fellow classics student with Oscar Wilde at school, Purser was appointed professor of Latin at Trinity College, Dublin, and later served as president of the Royal Irish Academy. Lolly Yeats was his closest female friend.
