The page describes Dunbar-Nasmith's heroism in the First World WarLoosely inserted is an accompanying autograph letter signed, dated 21 December 1963, in which Agar expresses his hope that the book will bring to mind a time "when Britain sent its ships all over the world on missions of goodwill."Dunbar-Nasmith was the first submariner to reach flag rank and the Second Sea Lord from 1935 to 1938, having been awarded the VC during the war for attacking Turkish naval forces in the Sea of Marmara. He was promoted to rear-admiral in 1928 and vice-admiral in 1932, the same year that he became Commander-in-Chief, East Indies. During the Second World War, he served as Commander-in-Chief Western Approaches and then as flag officer in charge, London.Decorated with the VC in 1919, Agar "epitomized the 'sea dog' of British naval tradition" (ODNB). His autobiography - Footprints in the Sea - was published in 1959.
