A polyglot, Claudius Rich was appointed the East India Company's resident at Baghdad in early 1808, having spent a decade travelling in Egypt and the Middle East, sometimes in disguise. Part of his manuscript library is now housed in the British Museum.The author, Rich's great-great-niece, scoured family libraries for primary material on her subject, supplementing these with official East India Company records.
