Events in the Taeping Rebellion. First edition. Hake (1849-1916) supplements Gordon's journals with an introduction, notes, and a facsimile of his hand-drawn map of the area around Suzhou.During the Taiping rebellion Gordon took command of the Ever Victorious Army and "defeated [the rebellion] by the mobility of his forces, particularly the swift and flexible manoeuvring of armed steamboats... This unorthodox warfare, combined with the ascendancy which Gordon established over his men, enabled him to crush the rebellion in eighteen months" (ODNB). In the aftermath he was lauded for his leadership and was bestowed the highest rank in the Chinese military.
