The Merchant of Yonkers. First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author to his relative Helen Topliff Wilder: "for Aunt Helen, with love from Thornton, New York City, April 13 1939". This play is an Americanized adaptation of the Austrian playwright Johann Nestroy's He'll Have Himself a Good Time (1842), itself based on John Oxenford's one-act farce A Day Well Spent (1835).This copy came from the collection of Steve Forbes, chairman of Forbes Magazine and presidential candidate in the 1996 and 2000 US elections.
