Ploughshares. First editions, inscribed by the editor on the title pages, "Seamus Heaney, inscribed for Paul Sullivan, May Day 1988" and "Seamus Heaney, May Day 1988". Paul Sullivan was a close friend and patron of Heaney. This copy was acquired directly from Sullivan's estate.DeWitt Henry and Irish expatriate Peter O'Malley established Ploughshares in 1971. Heaney, as guest editor, invited contributions from Irish writers such as Paul Muldoon and Brian Friel, while Ted Hughes also submitted four poems. An extract from Heaney's own Sweeney Astray (1983) appears in Volume 6, three years before it was first published in full.
