Essays on the protecting system. First edition of this pamphlet on trade protectionism. It collects four publications: a set of addresses given in 1819 to the Philadelphia Society for the promotion of National Industry; a criticism of Smith's treatment of free trade in Wealth of Nations (1776); a further essay on free trade; and commentary on Connecticut's domestic trade by the state governor Oliver Wolcott.Following the protective tariff of 1828, nicknamed the "Tariff of Abominations" by critics in the southern states, free trade became the central issue of the US elections. The Democratic Party was set up in retaliation to the tariff, resulting in the election of Andrew Jackson (1767-1845) as the seventh president in 1829. In 1830, the year of publication, the Democratic Party campaigned on reducing tariffs, which would protect the economy of the South, and won widespread electoral victories.
