Hazlitt contends that it was ultimately caused by an undue increase in the money supply, in stark contrast to Milton Friedman's contemporary arguments. By way of solutions, he suggested that private citizens and corporations should be allowed to coin their own currencies - although that argument made limited headway in contemporary economic circles.
