Money and Banking in Japan. First edition of this study of the Japanese economy, with a short introduction by Prince Konoe, who would soon usurp Prime Minister Yonai and formalize Japan's alliance with Nazi Germany. In the early months of 1940, Yonai was resisting army demands to align his country with the Nazis, but Japanese relations with the Allies had been deteriorating throughout the late 1930s. Shortly after the publication of this book, Yonai was replaced with Konoe, who soon signed the Tripartite Pact with Germany and Italy. The day after Pearl Harbor - when Japanese planes also attacked British targets in Malaya and Singapore - the United Kingdom declared war on Japan.Money and Banking in Japan - the first such study in English - was authored by the Siamese economist Phra Sarasas (1889-1966), who had briefly served as minister of economic affairs.
