Vie de Jean Howard. First edition in French of the first biography of the influential philanthropist and penal reformer John Howard (1726-1790), written by his close friend, the surgeon John Aikin, and first published in English in 1792. Profusely annotated by the translator A. M. H. Boulard, it is "one of the chief sources for all subsequent biographies" of Howard (Baumgartner).Aikin acted as editor and medical advisor during the drafting of Howard's The State of the Prisons in England and Wales (1777), "the first major practical work on the subject" (PMM).
