Two Essays. I. On the fourfold root of the principle of sufficient reason. II. On the will in nature. First edition in English of these papers, among the first translations of Schopenhauer's works to be published in England. This volume collects his doctoral thesis of 1813 and a short work from 1836, in which he combines his metaphysical views with the latest scientific evidence. The translator was Jessie Hillebrand (1829-1905), the Anglo-German musician, former lover of Richard Wagner, and widow of Karl Hillebrand (1829-1884), a prominent supporter of Nietzsche.
