Hapoel: Sport Association of Jewish Workers in Palestine. First edition, traced at the National Library of Israel only, of this brochure issued by the socialist Hapoel sports association. Founded in 1926 to rival Maccabi, Hapoel saw sport as inextricably linked with politics and the pursuit of Jewish statehood - a means to achieve solidarity and vitality in Palestine's Jewish labour movement and broader community. The sports described and pictured include, for example, track and field, swimming, cross-country, gymnastics, sailing, and volleyball. The brochure emphasizes the contributions of members to the war effort, in particular the use of its rowing and sailing schemes to provide volunteers for the Royal Navy.
