The Trees of Yosemite. First edition, first printing, inscribed by the author on the front pastedown, "To Adeline Palache, with the hope that she will come and visit the aforesaid trees. Mary Tresidder. May 21 1936". A keen botanist, Tresidder (1893-1970) was the President of the Yosemite Park and Curry Company - the concessionaire of the national park - and here offers a beautifully illustrated guide to Yosemite's forests.The Curry family settled in Yosemite Valley in 1899 and thereafter established a successful recreational camp. They firmly believed that the primary purpose of national parks was enjoyment, promoting tourist events such as the annual Yosemite Firefall, a summer spectacle during which burning embers were spilled from the top of Glacier Point to give the appearance of a glowing waterfall. Tressider and her husband, Donald, took on increased responsibilities in the park after the death of her parents, David and Jennie, and remained involved in its management until their deaths.Tressider's descriptions are supplemented by numerous charming illustrations. Taylor Hoss (1900-1997) was a close friend of Tressider and an accomplished printmaker whose work focused on her love of the natural world.The recipient of this volume, Adeline Palache (b. 1908), was born Adriana Beukenkamp, and married South African businessman Jean-Henri Tresfon (1893-1988) in 1940.
