First edition, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Victor Ross, with warmest good wishes & much gratitude for the high quality of your publication, Mary Whitehouse, 9.6.80". The recipient was Victor Ross (1919-2021), a senior executive at Reader's Digest and head of the firm's European division. Teacher and conservative activist, Mary Whitehouse campaigned against social liberalism and most of the mainstream British media. In 1965, she founded the National Viewers' and Listeners' Association to rally against the BBC. Reader's Digest evidently met Whitehouse's moral standards.
