A piece of campaign ephemera in support of the Progressive/Bull Moose Party's 1912 third-party presidential ticket, which pitted Theodore Roosevelt against his former Republican colleague William Howard Taft and Democrat Woodrow Wilson. At the Progressive National Convention in Chicago that year, the social and political reformer Jane Addams gave a speech seconding the nomination of Theodore Roosevelt. Her speech, reprinted in this handbill, reads in part: "A great party has pledged itself to the protection of children, to the care of the aged, to the relief of overworked girls, to the safeguarding of burdened men. Committed to these humane undertakings it is inevitable that such a party should appeal to women, should seek to draw upon the great reservoir of their moral energy so long undesired and unutilized in practical politics—one is the corollary of the other; a programme of human welfare, the participation of women in political life....I second the nomination of Theodore Roosevelt because he is one of the few men in our public life who has responded to the social appeal, who has caught the significance of the modern movement."The Bull Moose platform, printed on the final page of this handbill, endorsed noteworthy social and political reforms, including the eight-hour workday and women's suffrage: "The Progressive Party, believing th
