Each volume contains a new introduction by Greene. "In the period between the great depression and the beginning of the cold war the three indispensable novelists are Greene, George Orwell, and Evelyn Waugh... Greene had a rare ability to capture the confusion and terror of the twentieth century" (ODNB). This "indispensable" quality is supported by the fact that Greene was still publishing new material whilst the collected edition was being released, with The Honorary Consul (1973) and The Human Factor (1978) appearing as volumes 21 and 22 respectively. Greene's Collected Essays appeared in 1969, published as a separate volume to the collected edition. 23 vols, octavo. Vol. 19 with map and 6 double-sided photographic plates. Original green cloth, spines lettered in gilt, drab endpapers to all but Collected Essays, top edges of all but Collected Essays and vol. I green. With dust jackets by Michael Harvey. Contemporary ownership inscription of one Kiell-Anne David to vols 2-13. Occasional small bumps to spines and corners; jackets of vols 15-17, 20, and 22 price-clipped, spines toned, a little nicked and creased, two short closed tears to Collected Essays: a near-fine set.
