Chemin de fer du Hédjaz. Règlement pour Mécaniciens & Chauffeurs. First edition of this rare manual for mechanics and drivers working for the Hijaz railway, printed in 1912, four years after the line had reached Medina and the year before a station was opened in Damascus. We have traced no institutional copies. An overview of the requirements for the selection of mechanics and drivers, including minimum age, character, and competencies, is followed by a description of duties, responsibilities, regulations about manoeuvres, and various procedures to drive locomotives and trains in and out of depots. Chapters are also devoted to the use of signals, train speed, breaks, the circulation of sole locomotives, and various extraordinary circumstances, such as the sudden incapacitation of the driver, train breakdown, and derailing.
