A large and colourful map showing India as it was under the height of British Rule, following the defeat of Tipu Sultan by the Governor-General Richard Wellesley (1760-1842). Aaron Arrowsmith (1750-1823) was one of the most influential cartographers of his time and, after a fairly anonymous youth, set up on his own in 1790 and spent over 30 years becoming elevated in his field. Rare, with only 3 copies in institutions worldwide (British Library, Harvard, and BNF). Large folding map of India with fine original hand-colour, dissected into 36 pieces and laid on linen, edged in blue silk. Overall size when open: 190 cm x 161.7 cm.
