The Popes of Rome: Fourth edition, attractively bound. Thomas Babington Macaulay stated "the original book of Professor Ranke is known and esteemed wherever German literature is studied". It was first published in German in 1834-6, then in the English translation of Sarah Austin in 1840. Austin was an editor and linguist who introduced many major German thinkers to British audiences.
