Glück had been guest editor of the American poet's annual anthology The Best American Poetry in 1992. The collaboration occurred in spite of her apprehension towards the "tyranny of tastemaking" (Glück, p. xxi).This collection of essays by the Nobel laureate draws on her biography, the poets who influenced her, and contemporary critical thought to form "the testament of a major poet". Several of the essays first appeared in literary journals; this is their first appearance in book form. Glück's introduction to The Best American Poetry is included in the selection from her work. An Ecco Press promotional slip is loosely inserted.
