Rilke's only long work of prose, he called it a "prose book" rather than a novel. Written as a series of entries without a definite plot, it is the first work of German literature to depart from the realistic style of the 19th century.This was Rilke's only long work of prose, a semi-autobiographical work drawing on his time in Paris, "in which he was conscious of having marshalled the entire resolve of his existence" (Betz p.3). The novel was translated into English in 1930 by M.D. Herter Norton John Linton under the name The Journal of my Other Self.
