The Casket: or a Collection of Sacred Poetry taken from Various Authors. First edition of this unrecorded poetical anthology, printed by a local Southampton apprentice for his friends the year before his early death. Probably produced at the Southampton stationer's office, to which the 1841 census records George Littlecott was apprenticed, the collection includes the verses of William Wordsworth, John Clare, Felicia Hemans, John Knox, and John Keble, among others.The edition anticipates Littlecott's final farewell to his friends and is dedicated as "a poor memorial of the attachment which has existed, and which he hopes will exist, until he or they shall be called to their 'long home'". Littlecott was "called" the following year: a notice in the Salisbury and Winchester Journal records his death of consumption in Surrey on 6 December 1847, age 22.We have traced no records of the edition in WorldCat or auction records.
