Mayumi Hosokura – Kawasaki Photographs (2017) Kawasaki Photographs is a striking portrait of youth culture and everyday life in Kawasaki, the industrial city located between central Tokyo and Yokohama, photographed by Japanese artist Mayumi Hosokura. The photographs were originally made between 2016 and 2017 for the magazine Cyzo, accompanying writer Ryo Isobe’s reportage on Kawasaki. The photobook re-edits photographs from the series together with additional unpublished images. Hosokura moves through a world of young people, friends, rappers, tattoos, streets, cars, industrial landscapes, nightlife, and intimate everyday moments. Members of BAD HOP, the influential hip-hop crew that emerged from Kawasaki, also appear in the book. At the same time, this is much more than a document of Japanese hip-hop culture. Kawasaki is presented as a complex urban environment shaped by industry, migration, multicultural communities, and generations of people living somewhat outside the polished image usually associated with Tokyo. Hosokura is particularly interested in youth, bodies, sexuality, and the boundaries between people and their surroundings. Her distinctive use of color and intimate approach to portraiture gives the photographs a sensitivity that contrasts with the toughness of their environment.
