Michael [Walad el Michael] the refugee Abyssinian chief bothers me & it will end in one’s being obliged to attack him, but before doing so I must see if Johannes will pardon his men for if not they will have no option but to conquer us or be killed & I hate enemies driven to desperation."; and another letter signed to Nugent by Major-General George Wrottesley, 8vo (10) *** An interesting and important collection of autograph letters by Gordon of Khartoum (1833-85) written during his time as the Governor of the Egyptian Sudan and talking about: Relations with the Ethiopian Empire and Gordon being kept "semi prisoner" by the Emperor Yohannes IV; suppression of the slave traders in Shaka; plans to eliminate the slave trade in Darfur; Gordon's attempts to manage Sudan's financial deficit, and; suffering from "the plague of Egyptian boils."
