Americana.- Caricature on post-Civil War American identity.- Bridgman (George) America, lithograph with original hand-colouring, on thick wove paper without watermark, sheet 397 x 270 mm (15 5/8 x 10 5/8 in), marginal toning and discolouration to upper right and lower right margin, soft creases to lower right, unframed, [circa 1880]; together with 5 Vanity Fair portraits of American politicians, all unframed, 19th century (6)*** An English caricature of the "typical" American; a shabby haired, well-dressed figure with a bag of greenbacks under his arm, with a locomotive marked progress is in the background.Scarce at auction; we have been unable to find another example sold. Institutional examples are held in the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, and in the Boston Public Library.
