Collection of photographs and letters relating to India, comprising 5 vol. photograph albums, loose silver gelatin photographs, and, various typewritten and manuscript letters and documents, c.530 silver gelatin photographic prints mounted or loosely inserted in albums, some captioned by hand, 26 silver gelatin photographic prints, loose as issued, c.70 manuscript and typewritten letters, documents and newspaper cuttings, albums in original cloth, a little rubbed, slight bumping to corners and extremities, letters and documents housed in near contemporary small box, notes to lid in manuscript, v.s. c.1910; 1920s-40s; 1968 & 1983 (sm. bundle) *** An interesting collection of items belonging to William Spencer Benton (1893-1983) and his second wife Dorothy Charlotte Benton (1911-1992), with most relating to their time spent in and around India. William was an engineer and Executive of Government Railways in British India between 1919 and 1948, where he was responsible for railway and bridge construction, linking coal fields in Bihar and Orissa. A rich archive documenting the life of a British railway official in India towards the end of the British rule in India. With images and documents relating to life in the Kashmir and Punjab regions from the 1920s until the 1940s.
