Italy.- Renaissance city fortifications.- Italian School (probably late 16th century) Four sheets of original drawings of city fortifications, including one study for a map, pen and brown ink on various laid papers, two sheets with watermarks of anchor within circle surmounted by pointed star [similar to Briquet 525 and others; all recorded by Briquet as mid- to late-16th century], sheets between approx. 300 x 250 mm (11 3/4 x 9 3/4 in), and 385 x 530 mm (15 1/8 x 20 3/4 in), handling creases, old folds, surface dirt and browning, some small losses, all loose unframed, [probably 16th century]; together with a group of 16 ink and watercolour fortification drawings by a later hand, probably late 18th or 19th century (20)Provenance:Library of the Earls of Macclesfield [blind stamp to each sheet]*** An early example of original drawings relating to the Renaissance interest in ‘fortification literature’, which flourished from the 16th to 18th centuries.
