Middle East.- Souhby (Dr. Saleh) P lerinage a la Mecque et a Médine, first edition, presentation inscription from author to Ahmad Mazlum, half-title, 19 photographic plates, evenly toned throughout, occasional light off-setting and spotting, later calf-backed boards, fractional rubbing to corners, 8vo, Cairo, Imprimerie Nationale, 1894. *** Presentation inscription to Ahmad Mazlum (1858-1949), and Egyptian judge, cabinet minister (Minster of Justice and then Minister of Finance) and Parliamentary Leader. Souhby was an Egyptian public health official who was commissioned by Khedive 'Abbas II to write a report on the sanitary conditions experienced by pilgrims travelling to Mecca. He performed the hajj twice, once in 1888 and again in 1891, producing this detailed account, to which are affixed a response to European criticisms of Islam and an appendix making several suggestions with regard to improving hygiene practices en route.
