Polar.- Amundsen (Roald) The South Pole, 2 vol., first English edition, presentation copy inscribed to Robert Billings "with thanks for the pains and care bestowed upon the production of these volumes from John Murray and John Murrary (junr) Nov 21 1912", half-titles, frontispieces, plates and illustrations, 2 folding maps, very occasional light spotting, faint toning to endpapers, original cloth, upper joint beginning to split (vol. 1), slight bumping to corners and extremities, 1912; and 2 ALs to Robert Billings loosely inserted, one from John Murray Junior reading, "I am sending to you today under a separate cover a copy of Amundsen's "South Pole" ... as a mark of our keen appreciation of the trouble and care which you and your firm have given to the printing of this most interesting & important volumes", and one from another printer, both letters dated November 21st 1912, 8vo (4) *** An interesting association copy, gifted by the publisher John Murray to the printer Robert Billings. The letters included suggest that the production of this work was more complicated than most works.
