West Indies.- Collection of manuscripts, merchants' receipts, broadsides, printed documents and an autograph letter, c.50 pieces, folds some creasing, several with worming or loss affecting text, worst to the broadsides, v.s., c.1865-66. *** An extensive collection of items relating to New York merchants' trade in the Caribbean just after the end of the American Civil War. Many of the documents were created or copied in St. Thomas City (now Charlotte Amalie), then the capital of the Danish West Indies, a trade hub of the Caribbean at the time largely due to the very low customs duties. The Danish West Indies were eventually purchased from Denmark by the US and became the United States Virgin Islands.
