World.- Mercator (Rumold) Orbis Terrae Compendiosa Descriptio, highly decorative world map, a condensed version of Rumold's father's world map of 1569, with elaborate strapwork borders, armillary sphere, compass rose, galleon and sea monster, engraving on laid paper with armorial watermark, platemark 290 x 520 mm. (11 1/2 x 20 1/2 in), sheet 465 x 560 mm. (18 1/4 x 22 in), Latin text verso, central vertical fold as issued but with fine parallel creases and repairs, mainly to the upper and lower sections but with small loss elsewhere, off-setting visible in left-hand margin, otherwise minor surface dirt, unframed, [circa 1587 but slightly later].LIterature:Shirley, The Mapping of the World, no. 157
