Für Darwin. First edition of this paper offering supporting evidence for the theory of natural selection, "a fundamental contribution to evolutionary biology at a critical moment during its infancy" (DSB). Müller, a German biologist living in Brazil, drew on observations "collected upon the same South American ground on which the idea first occurred" (p. iii, our translation). Darwin wrote to Müller (1822-1897) in praise of the paper: "You have done admirable service in the cause in which we both believe. Many of your arguments seem to me excellent, & many of your facts wonderful... They shew [sic] what a wonderful field there is for enquiry on the development of crustacea; and nothing has convinced me so plainly what admirable results we shall arrive at in Natural History in the course of a few years" (Darwin Correspondence Project). Müller also corresponded with Darwin on his botanical research; his observations were incorporated into the 1877 second edition of the Fertilisation of Orchids. This copy is from the collection of the cardiologist and medical historian Wallace Bruce Fye (b. 1946).
