The Morphia Habit and Its Voluntary Renunciation: First edition, inscribed by the author in French on the first blank: "To General Chabot, a heartfelt tribute from the author. Dr Oscar Jennings" (translated). The author ran a morphine addiction clinic in Paris; he had himself been addicted to morphine for 25 years, which gave him insight into the condition and its treatments. From the Crime Library of Patricia Cornwell. The Morphia Habit and its Voluntary Renunciation approaches opiate addiction as having both physiological and psychological dimensions and highlights the importance of self-will, along with positive habits and the development of safe social contexts. It also considers the co-morbidity of opiate addiction and chronic illness, and the interrelation of opiates with other substances such as alchohol and cocaine. Suggested physical treatments include tonics and baths, and psychological recommendations include hypnosis and suggestion. The book was part of a development in addiction theory that moved away from considering substance abuse as a moral failing into regarding it as a treatable condition.
