Tratamiento del Aborto. Tesis de Concurso ("Treatment of Abortion. Competition Thesis"). First edition of the Mexican doctor's submission to the open competition for the position of Adjunct Professor of Clinical Obstetrics at the National School of Medicine. "Abortion cases are multiplying more and more each day... Since social customs have an undeniable influence, it will become clear how important abortion therapy is for every doctor" (p. 6, our translation).Other theses submitted for consideration were A. J. Carbajal's paper on pregnancy and uterine cancer; Rafael Norman's on the mechanism of childbirth; and Manuel Barreiro Vallejo's on the lateralization of the foetal head. The post was ultimately awarded to Barreiro Vellejo, an unpopular decision that led ten other professors to sign a petition of protest (Penyak, p. 71).Evidently undeterred, in July 1897 Gómez was appointed a Corresponding Member of the Mexican Medical Academy based on the strength of his work on emergency caesareans. He continued to contribute obstetric papers to the Academy's Gazette, including one in November 1898 on the frequency of tuberculosis in pregnancy.
