Why I Left Germany. First edition, the publisher's retained file copy. This is a frank, personal account of the rise of the Nazis and their early period in power, by a German Jew who still remains anonymous. They note the widespread hatred of Jews in Germany and the broad public support for Nazi actions, which ultimately forced them to emigrate. The book was translated by American journalist Margaret Goldsmith, who spent much of her childhood in Germany. She served as assistant trade commissioner at the American Embassy in Germany in the 1920s where she had a short affair with Vita Sackville-West.
