Presidential Address by H.R.H. The Duke of Edinburgh to the British Association for the Advancement of Science. First edition, signed by Prince Philip on the first page of his presidential address. Loosely inserted is a typed letter signed from the prince to the chemist Brigadier-General Sir Harold Brewer Hartley (1878-1972), one of his mentors and his predecessor as president of the association.The prince's letter is reproduced on page 43 of the volume. In it, he thanks Hartley for "taking the Chair [of a forthcoming meeting] on my behalf, and for sparing so much time to deal with the business of the Association during my absence abroad." A notice on page 48 from the association's executive committee is signed by two local honorary secretaries.
