The "First" Colliery: An Almanac of Four Drawings. A scarce calendar, featuring cartoons of the crowded and chaotic scenes of a coal mine, distributed by the Lancashire Associated Collieries, and covering the months April 1938 - March 1939. William Heath Robinson (1872-1944) was best known for his illustrations of whimsical and absurd gadgets, known as "Heath Robinson contraptions".Robinson has been described as "the greatest" comic artist and "the most versatile" major book illustrator of his age in Britain (Peppin and Micklethwait, p. 259), and "the only British illustrator to become a 'household name'" (Houfe, p. 437).
