Commodore Tyrwhitt: An otherwise untraced typescript English translation of this detailed biography, from the library of Admiral Dunbar-Nasmith, the first submariner to reach flag rank, although unmarked as such. The work was first published in Dutch in 1938 – perhaps privately as only two copies are recorded on WorldCat. Sir Reginald Yorke Tyrwhitt (1870-1951) commanded the Harwich Force, a squadron dedicated to the protection of local British waters and the North Sea during the First World War. The force gave the German navy their first loss of the war, the minelayer SS Königin Luise on 5 August 1914. Tyrwhitt also led a flotilla of destroyers and cruisers at the Battle of Heligoland Blight, the Cuxhaven Raid, and at the Battle of Dogger Bank.His biography was written by Hendrik Albert van Foreest (1898-1981), himself a high-ranking officer in the Royal Netherlands Navy. He spent most of his career in the Dutch East Indies, commanding destroyers and serving as Chief of Personnel. This translation of his work was likely produced in a very limited number for internal military distribution, and we have traced no other copies.
