All Quiet on the Western Front. First edition in English, in a notably well-preserved example of the dust jacket. Remarque's elegy to the generation that had been "destroyed by war, even though it might have escaped its shells" sold 2.5 million copies in 22 languages in its first 18 months in print (Falls, p. 293).The novel first appeared in late 1928 as a serial in the Vossische Zeitung and was published in book form in German in January 1929. This British edition was published in March 1929, three months before the US edition. It was adapted into a critically acclaimed film in 1930, directed by Lewis Milestone.
