The Ancestry of General Grant, and Their Contemporaries. First edition, presentation copy to William Tecumseh Sherman, inscribed on the initial blank, "With the compliments of the author who is a relative of the late Gen. U. S. Grant and a brother of the late Bvt. Brig. Gen. E.G. Marshall". The posthumous bookplate of Sherman, and that of his son Philemon Tecumseh Sherman (1867-1941), are on the front pastedown. Marshall's handwritten calling card is loosely inserted. Issued the year Grant became President, this genealogy traces his descent from Puritan settlers of the 1630s, presenting him as the heir to old New England civic virtue and republican duty. The inscription refers to Elisha Gaylord Marshall (1829-1883), a brevet brigadier general of the Union Army. The inscription dates from between Grant's death in 1885 and Sherman's in 1891.
