New York in the War of the Rebellion 1861 to 1865. First edition, presentation copy, inscribed on the title page, "General Josiah Porter with the warmest regards of Fred Phisterer". Porter (1830-1894) served in the Massachusetts Light Artillery in the Civil War. In 1886 he became the adjustant-general of the 22nd Regiment of the New York National Guard.Phisterer (1836-1909) served in the Union Army and received the Medal of Honor for bravery at the Battle of Stones River in 1862. After the war, he helped organize New York State's military records and wrote extensively on military history. In the preface, he describes this work as the first official history of New York's involvement in the war, the result of eight years of research.
